Georgia Metaxas is an Australian photographer based in London. Her work sits within a documentary framework, aspects acknowledging her interest in documentary photography and the tension found between ‘artistic’ intent and documentary purpose.

Portraiture is at the core of her work and is examined predominantly through universal rituals and gestures. Metaxas employs a considered and deliberate approach, a conceptually inspired rendering drawn from the chaos of reality.

Metaxas has exhibited throughout Australia and recently, abroad including China, Germany and the United Kingodm. She has participated in a number of group exhibitions such as Melbourne Now at the National Gallery of Victoria, 2014. Her work has also been selected for numerous award exhibitions, including Melbourne's Centre for Contemporary Photography’s Documentary Award 2009, the 2012 National Portrait Prize, Canberra and The Final Nine, London UK 2014. In 2010 her work was included in the Big City Press publicationHijacked Volume 2: Australia and Germany. Residencies include the Fundacion Botin Residency Award facilitated in Spain by photographer Paul Graham, 2011 and FATHOM15, artist in residency at Four Corners in London UK, 2015.

Her work is held in private collections in Australia and the United Kingdom as well as in public collections and institutions including Artbank, City of Melbourne Arts & Heritage Collection, City of Yarra Arts & Heritage Collection, La Trobe Picture Collection; State Library of Victoria; Monash Gallery of Art, National Gallery of Victoria and the Supreme Court of Victoria.
